QR Generator provides amazonians a safe way to create QR codes
Create codes either in bulk (up to 20,000) or one at a time.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Before CAPT UX assumed ownership of QR in Q4 2020, it existed as a command line tool. In this form, the tool required a single-threaded owner to run the command for each QR code requested. Requests were typically received via email. This bottlenecked process was unsustainable.
THE IDEA
We aimed to deliver a simple, user-friendly, customizable self-service QR generator that did not require any backend processing (and thus did not incur associated AWS costs.) And that’s exactly what we built.
THE RESULTS
In March 2021, we launched QR Generator to expedite the creation of QR codes from any public URL. These codes can be exported as PNG, JPG, or print-friendly Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG).
Our first user report revealed that, QR served its intended Brand Innovation Lab audience and was also used by different teams including Prime Gaming, AWS WWRO Sales Enablement, CCS Munich, Line Haul Field TOM, AWS Infra Delivery Ops, and Global Real Estate and Facilities (GREF).
I proactively collaborated with these external teams to seize an opportunity to save the Amazon Hub Marketing team and GREF an estimated $1MM annually by enabling them to quickly bulk generate QR codes and add tracking functionality. When our team had down time between projects, we worked on adding these tracking extensions and a bulk upload feature that enabled users to generate up to 20,000 codes per session.
