ALWAYS HAS SOMETHING TO SAY

The first time I took center stage I was 6 years old. Eventually, as day job schedules got more hectic, I said a sad goodbye to the theatre, but a happy hello to a variety of voiceover projects and a spot in LVN LVN, a 2-member, pandemic-inspired band.

Back when I lived in Texas, I was lucky enough to attend a silent retreat at Siddhayatan, a center in Windom run by Acharya Shree Yogeesh. While there, I got an autographed copy of this incredible book and lessons that still continue to shape my decisions and inspire calm in every storm.

I like to go to bookstores and wander around until books “speak to me.” Awareness: The Key to Living in Balance by Osho literally fell off of a shelf at a Dallas Barnes and Noble and hit me in the head … a similar feeling to the one I had while reading the contents. Quickly after devouring this title, I purchased Creativity - another soul-shaping read. Dig into Osho’s teachings. He’s not only insightful, he’s also hilarious.

Sometimes we deal with shit that’s so crazy, we have to make jokes about it to avoid being the punchline. In Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things, the brilliant Jenny Lawson does an incredible job of tackling touchy subjects in a way that will touch you.

I laughed out loud when I saw “I Feel Bad About My Neck” on the shelves at LGA and immediately bought it based on the title alone. Nora Ephron’s writing is perfect. It’s honest. It’s insightful. And it made me feel better about my neck.

During my time leading the Entertainment group at Amazon Advertising, my boss gifted each teammate with a copy of the beautifully illustrated and poignantly written “What do you do with a problem?” by Kobi Yamada about confronting problems before they overtake your life.

The first Tom Robbins book I ever read was Jitterbug Perfume. It was unlike anything I’d ever read before. The writing was raw like Bukowski, but somehow simultaneously delicate like a whispered secret between lovers beneath clean white sheets. I brought the Kindle version with me on my honeymoon in Tulum and recently ordered a first edition paperback from a Goodwill located on the other side of the US. In 2016, I had a chance to meet Robbins when he visited Seattle. You can see me asking him to autograph the newspaper article I’d found on the ground the day of his event promoting his appearance (which I previously knew nothing about.) The universe constantly leaves you little gifts that guide you to the right place at the right time. You just have to keep your eyes open for them.

MAXIM Radio Level-Update Podcast

Back in the early 2000s, I had a great wig and an alter ego—The Game Dame. In addition to writing video game news, reviews, and updates for my blog and a few mags, I co-wrote and voiced the Level-Update podcast segment for MAXIM radio. Below is a snippet from one of my favorite episodes.

My First Talent Show

Just for fun (and to prove I have to work really hard to hide my natural Texan accent) here’s a video of my very first solo performance. I had just turned seven.
